Snoqualmie Pass Washington Saturday 07-12-08

A great place like this is one of the reasons we love to live in Washington. Linda and I decided to take a quick mountain bike ride at the pass today. Coming from Seattle you take I90 east and

exit at Hyak (No. 54). From there follow the signs to The Hyak Park. It used to be a railroad station.

Hyak doubles as a rail trail in the summer and one of the finest skate ski trails in the state during winter. I’m happy to report the Snoqualmie tunnel is open. People tell me it rains inside. You will need a lighting system and cool weather clothes for the tunnel.

This trail starts in North Bend at Rattle snake ridge and goes east beyond the state line. The trail is not a secret so there is a lot of traffic. We are here for a quick ride. So we head east.

The sun is out. The temperature is high with a light breeze and low humidity. Perfect! We had near record snow over the winter and Keechelus Lake looks like it is full of water. This is good because California needs the electricity.

If you’re a back country camper there is a great one at mile marker no. 646. Clean rest rooms and places to pitch your tent are just a few feet from the trail. No doubt it really gets quiet at night. Be a good camper. I have seen bear on this trail and cougars have been reported in the area too.

There are more side trails and fire roads than I can count along the John Wayne trail. If you’re planning a trip out here feel free to email me any questions you have.
